About Us

My name is Karen Mavec. I am creating Kau Hale Center. The first time I visit Kauai I think “ I am home”. I happen upon an ancient caldera at the base of Nou Nou Mountain (Sleeping Giant Mt. ), and I sense this is a special area. I immediately decide to live here. I relocate from Japan with 3 children, I immerse myself in Hawaiian culture, traditions and art and I am currently practicing Huna and Hula under the auspices of Puna Kalama Dawson.

As a strong spiritual practioner, my approach to caring for this sacred ground is twofold: to honor the ancient Hawaiian ancestors by continuing to fulfill their original purpose and to create and maintain space for living human beings to reconnect with who and what we really are and  with the purpose for being on earth.  I came to know that the traditional Hawaiian Elders dedicated this ground as a place of refuge and spiritual practice where the makaainana (people of the land and the caregivers of the land) to the kealii ( the caregivers of the people and the land) would prepare for ceremonies and special events. I also learned that the name of the stream flowing through this place of refuge translates as the foundation of everlasting light; or, as the beacon of light supreme. I fully embrace with my heart and resonate the truth of this living legacy.

It is this everlasting source of light and renewal that I choose to share with others. I recognize from direct experience the quality present in this place and that this quality supports the changes other living human beings choose to make in their lives. In the true spirit of aloha, I offer this place for others to share, explore and experience the beauty and peace of a profoundly sacred spot.

For years I have been studying and practicing Feng Shui and geomancy, utilizing my knowledge in various ways while creating this place.  I express my love of art and beauty in the landscape and architecture. In my own healing and spiritual path I delve into a multitude of healing modalities including Ayurveda, Aromatherapy, Acupressure, Yoga, energetic healing and the profound meditation arts of Tibetan Buddhism. I have a commitment to organic gardening and cooking, practicing a holistic approach to health.

I have a lifelong commitment to the arts and I have both a Bachelors and Masters Degree in Japanese Studies and International Finance. I am fluent in Japanese.

My commitment to peacemaking resulted in co-founding the Living Arts Institute in alignment with the Season for Non-Violence: an international grass roots initiative for developing a culture of peace. Here in Kauai my activities included creating a public labyrinth walk and grade school curriculum at Kapa’a Elementary School. In Los Angeles, through  LAI I helped sponsor a series of similar events and teachings for children in Elementary and High School.
